Gothenburg, August 9th – 19th, 2022

We are pleased to welcome young talents from Europe and worldwide to an exclusive International Ballet Intensive in Gothenburg / Sweden, with ABT Certified Teachers and Master Classes by Raymond Lukens and Franco De Vita!

Already in August 2019 Raymond Lukens and Franco De Vita visited Europe and Gothenburg to teach master classes in the ABT’s National Training Curriculum. In August 2022 we are honoured to offer a 10 days Summer Intensive for International Ballet Students age 15-20 with ballet and repertory by ABT Certified Teachers and with Master Classes by Raymond Lukens and Franco De Vita from ABT.

The intensive will take place at the Swedish National Ballet School in Gothenburg and are open to any ballet students in Europe and worldwide .

During the same period the Swedish National Ballet School will offer an ABT International Teacher Training Intensive with ABT Curriculum Teacher Training Sessions. Read more about the ABT Teacher Training here

There are a limited amount of places for the International Ballet Intensive with ABT Master Classes 

All students have to have a strong classical ballet technique and a minimum of four years of training at an advanced level.

All students needs to provide a short audition video (approximately 10 min.) including excerpts from barre and center.

All students must be covered by their own medical insurance and responsible for any medical coverage or injury related expenses. 

No refunds of the student fee when the student is registrated for the intensive. Costs of accommodation and dinner can be refunded before June 1st.

After registration an invoice will be sent by email within 2 weeks. This invoice has to be paid full within 7 days, if not the place at the intensive can be given to someone else.

Participants under the age of 18 will receive an additional form that has to be filled out and signed by the parent(s) or guardian(s).

Dance classes

The students will have classical ballet and repertoire by ABT Certified Teachers along with contemporary workshops. Each group will have minimum 3 master classes (2h) by Raymond Lukens or Franco De Vita. For presentation of teachers, see below.

Student fee for a 10 days ballet intensive is 2000 SEK.

Normal fee is 6000 SEK but the summer intensive has been sponsored by Carina Ari Fundation

The tuition includes all dance classes, master classes, snacks and lunch each day. All participants are also welcome to take a trip to Liseberg – Gothenburg’s famous amusement park (entrance and ride pass are included in the student fee).

We will stay at Scandic Hotel Backadal only 3 min walk from our school

Accommodation

There are pre-booked hotel rooms at Scandic Hotel Backadal, located only 3 min walk from the school. In the accommodation fee dinner is included. You choose to stay in your own single room, share a double room or 4-bed room with some one you know also participating (please state this on the application) or let us combine the rooms.

ABT Certified Teachers

Raymond Lukens

American Ballet Theatre National Training Curriculum Associate Emeritus and Former Artistic Director, ABT National Training Curriculum (New York, USA)

Raymond Lukens was trained in New York City and had an international career as a ballet dancer; he co-authored the ABT National Training Curriculum and created the syllabi for the ABT/ NYU MA Program. He was a faculty member of the ABT JKO School. Before joining ABT, Mr. Lukens directed The Hamlyn School in Florence, Italy, was Ballet Master for Boston Ballet and Director of BB II. He has taught for ABT, The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, The Juilliard School and Dance Theater of Harlem; he has judged for international dance competitions, translated into Italian Joan Lawson’s book, Ballet Class, and has written several articles.

Mr. Lukens has also choreographed in the U.S.A. and abroad, including: two televised UNICEF galas, for The Intermezzo Ballet Company, for BB II and for ABT’s Opening Night Galas at the Metropolitan Opera House seasons featuring the ABT Studio Company and ABT JKO School dancers. Mr. Lukens was named the 2015 Lucia Chase Fellow in the School of Dance at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

Franco De Vita

American Ballet Theatre National Training Curriculum Associate Emeritus and Former Artistic Director, ABT JKO School (New York, USA). 

Franco De Vita received his dance training at the Conservatoire Royal de Charleroi, Belgium. He co-authored the ABT National Training Curriculum. Before joining ABT Mr. De Vita was Dean of Faculty and Curriculum at Boston Ballet School. He has taught for American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet, The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and Hartford Ballet. Mr. De Vita co-directed the Hamlyn School in Florence, Italy and is a renowned authority on the Cecchetti Method.

As a performer, Mr. De Vita performed principal roles in many European companies, including Florence’s Maggio Musicale, Aterballetto and Le Ballet Royal de Wallonie. Franco has judged for international dance competitions, including the Prix de Lausanne and YAGP. Under Mr. De Vita’s leadership the ABT JKO School became a Partner School of the Prix de Lausanne. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Dance Teacher Magazine.

Ola Beccau

Bitr. konstnärlig ledare, danshälsa

Det finns inget mer inspirerande än att arbeta med ungdomar som lägger sin själ, hjärta och engagemang i dansen – det är magiskt. Att bygga sin identitet med dansen ger fantastiska möjligheter att förstå det unika i sig själv och på samma gång förstå vad det innebär att vara en del av en större helhet.

Ola Beccau är utbildad vid Kungliga Svenska Balettskolan och Danshögskolan i Stockholm samt vid ABT i New York och har en professionell karriär som dansare bakom sig i bl a Östgötabaletten, KCDC och Adekwhat.  Han är en flitig gästlärare hos Alvin Ailey, Skånes Dansteater, Random Dance, Vietnam National Ballet, Vanemuine Ballett m fl.

Ola har även varit balettmästare vid Dansk Danseteater, arbetat med naprapati på Kungliga Operan i Stockholm, som danslärare vid Balettakademiens yrkesdansarutbildning i Stockholm och som universitetslektor vid danslärarutbildningen i Piteå.

Jon Ugarriza

I am very passionate about my role as a dancer, choreographer and educator of the new generation of dancers. I believe that learning new styles as well as finding new ways to share my experience and knowledge with future stars is essential for their creative development and full potential. I thrive on working in a professional dynamic team of individuals with different strengths and personalities connected by passion for the art of dance.

Jon Ugarriza has worked with the Victor Ullate Ballet, Zaragoza Ballet, English National Ballet, Tetsuya Kumakawa K- Ballet Company (Japan), the National Ballet of Portugal, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatsballet Berlin and the Basel Contemporary Ballet in Switzerland. Jon is also a member of the Jury of Diputación Foral de Bizkaia. As a choreographer he has developed pieces for top performers at the Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, Staats Ballet Berlin, Opéra de Nice, Ballerische Staatsoper, Joffrey Ballet in Chicago and the New York City Ballet.

Jon has a degree in Choreography and Dance Technique Performance from the Ministry of Education and the American Ballet Theatre® National Training Curriculum in New York.

Oliver Till

Danslärare i klassisk balett 

I have been incredibly lucky to have been taught by fantastic teachers who inspired me to achieve my best, personally and professionally. I feel humbled to have the opportunity to pass on that knowledge handed to me and my own experience of being a professional dancer to the next generation.

Oliver Till is a graduate from the Royal Ballet School and is former soloist at Birmingham Royal Ballet. During his time as a professional he performed a wide range of virtuoso and artistic roles, including Third Movement Principle (Dance House, D. Bintley), Lead Mandolin (Romeo and Juliet, Sir K. Macmillan), Brazilian Wooley Monkey (Still Life at the Penguin Café, D. Bintley), Dr Coppelius (Coppelia, Sir P. Wright) and Hilarion (Giselle, Sir P. Wright).

Oliver has coached students for competitions such as Youth America Grand Prix and is an ABT® Certified Teacher of the ABT® National Training Curriculum.

Jaime Hickey

Danslärare i klassisk balett 

I am passionate about helping young dancers strengthen their technique, develop their artistry and to find what makes them unique. It’s a truly special experience to guide these young dancers on their journey towards their goals.

Jaime Hickey received her training at Walnut Hill School for the Arts and at the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at ABT under the direction of Franco DeVita and Raymond Lukens. Upon graduation from the JKO School, Jaime joined American Ballet Theatre II directed by Wes Chapman and performed White Swan Pas De Deux, Raymonda, George Balanchine’s Allegro Brilliante, Carnival in Venice and Jerome Robbin’s Interplay.

Jaime then joined the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago. Here, her repertoire included Lar Lubovitch’s OTHELLO, Aria II in George Balanchine's Stravinsky Violin Concerto, Robert Joffrey’s The Nutcracker, Frederik Ashton’s Cinderella, Ronald Hynd’s The Merry Widow, Nijinsky's The Right of Spring and Yuri Possokhov's Don Quixote. She also danced with Ballet West and performed in the Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake and Giselle.

Jaime is an ABT® Certified Teacher of the ABT® National Training Curriculum and most recently Jaime was a faculty member at the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at ABT.

Joakim Stephenson

Joakim Stephenson är utbildad dansare vid Kungliga Svenska Balettskolan och startade sin karriär på Kungliga Operan 1991 och blev solist 2007. Joakim började tidigt att koreografera och har skapat ett flertal verk till bl a Bergmanfestivalen på Fårö och till kompaniet Stockholm 59° North.

Joakim undervisar även och är ofta anlitad som coach i Sverige och utomlands.

Heidi Vierthaler

Gästlärare i modern nutida dans (Stream-Flow movement method)

The inspiration for Stream-Flow came from very different angles. It is the starting point for all of my teaching and choreographic work for dance companies, universities and schools worldwide.

Heidi Vierthaler har en lång erfarenhet som dansare vid många internationella danskompanier, däribland the Forsythe Company, Ballet Frankfurt, Tanzwerk Nurnberg, Ballet Chicago and Pacific NW Ballet.

Heidi har även arbetat med NDT och är en flitig gästlärare vid bland annat Cullbergbaletten, Compania Nacional de Danza, Het National Ballet, Random Dance Company, Konservatorium Den Haag, Amsterdam University of the Arts, Palucca School Dresden och Akbank Sanat Istanbul.

Jag älskar att hjälpa unga människor utvecklas till deras fulla förmåga. Jag tror på att hög kvalitet och engagemang kommer genom att förstå potentialen hos varje enskild elev.

Sebastian Michanek har en bred erfarenhet som dansare och ledare. Han har vunnit Eurovision Young Dancers i modern nutida dans, dansat ledande roller i de stora klassiska baletterna och gestaltat historiska roller på Ulriksdals och Drottningholms slottsteatrar. Genom sin danskarriär har Sebastian arbetat med vår tids största koreografer och dansat med Kungliga Baletten, Royal Danish Ballet, The Australian Ballet, Arena di Verona Ballet samt som gästdansare runt om i Europa.

Sebastian Michanek har 9 års erfarenhet som konstnärlig chef för The Gotland International Dance Seminar och har också arbetat som europeisk chef, coach och mentor inom näringslivet både nationellt och internationellt.

Nina Höglund

Bitr. konstnärlig ledare, dansutbildning

Jag brinner för att utbilda unga människor i dans. Att föra över min danserfarenhet och medverka till att eleverna utvecklas och växer i sin förmåga att bli starka dansare, självständiga individer och scenkonstnärer. Jag vill se dem göra sina egna konstnärliga val och utvecklar sin dansteknik så att den blir fri utan begränsningar.

Nina Höglund är utbildad dansare och danspedagog. Hennes danskarriär domineras sedan tidigt 80-tal av medverkan i nyskapande kreationer av Sveriges mest framstående koreografer. I slutet av danskarriären gick Nina över till Kungliga Svenska Balettskolan i Stockholm som ledare och sedermera chef för den Nutida Moderna Inriktningen på skolan.
